The Institute for Government is the UK’s leading independent think tank working to make government more effective. Their office in St James, London comprises of meeting rooms, event spaces and a podcast studio.

The Challenge

The existing AV infrastructure was outdated, relying on analogue systems that no longer met modern requirements. Integration with a livestreaming setup was not possible due to mismatched resolutions and the difficulty in interfacing. The legacy control system was both inefficient and expensive to reprogram.

Additionally, the video projector had failed and was beyond economical repair, while the existing radio microphone system had become unusable due to changes in the 700MHz frequency spectrum allocation.

The Solution

A complete system upgrade was implemented to modernise the space while maintaining cost efficiency where possible:

  • Installed full HD video switching matrices with HDBaseT distribution over CAT6A cabling
  • Retrofitted a new 8,000-lumen projector using the existing mount
  • Reprogrammed and retained the existing audio DSP to maximise value
  • Upgraded floor box inputs with bespoke HDMI faceplates, preserving existing bases to reduce costs
  • Implemented a new control system with an iPad interface for intuitive operation of video switching and audio levels
  • Installed an 8-channel digital RF microphone system for reliable, future-proof wireless audio

The Outcome

The result is a modern, flexible event space capable of hosting live events, meetings, and livestreamed productions. Users can easily connect via HDMI for seamless presentations, supported by bright, high-quality projection and clear audio.

The intuitive control system simplifies operation, while integrated livestreaming capabilities expand the room’s functionality. The system was also configured to link with an adjoining space, enabling shared audio and visual content across both areas—enhancing versatility and audience reach.
